Wearing slippers rather than shoes when at home can save wear and tear on your carpets. Slippers and socks are also really comfortable and warm and are great to put on after a bath or when getting out of bed. However, over time slippers can become a bit smelly.
Even the most fastidious person will have feet that sweat. It can’t be helped as it’s the way we are made. We can wash our feet regularly, use foot powders and deodorants, but still they will sweat. The sweat gets into the soft fibres of even the best quality slippers and then there is the little bit of dirt that you might pick up on your bare feet. After a few months, your slippers get to look a little careworn and begin to smell.
As most of us wear our slippers with bare feet, then there is no barrier between our skin and the fabric of the slippers. Inevitably our slippers begin to suffer.
Baking soda is a great way of ridding slippers of unpleasant smells. Pack some baking soda into the toes of an old pair of socks or pantyhose. Tie the ends and then push the ‘balls’ into your slippers. Leave for at least 12 hours – 24 hours is even better – and then remove. The baking soda will have drawn out the smell.
To make your slippers smell a bit nicer, crumple up some dryer sheets and stuff them into your slippers. Choose a fragrance that you love, and leave for another 12 hours. Hey presto, lovely clean fragrant slippers! The same techniques work great for socks too.
Firstly, new slippers need to be looked after properly. Don’t let them get grubby by walking into the yard wearing them! Keep your feet clean, and use socks or foot covers when wearing your slippers. No-show socks are ideal and currently quite fashionable.
To keep your slippers from smelling use the baking soda trick outlined above followed up by the dryer sheets. Do this every month to keep your slippers both clean and sweet smelling.
